About Naturopathic Medicine

About Naturopathic Medicine

Definition of Naturopathic Medicine:

(excerpt from AANP House of Delegates Position Paper, Amended 2011)

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process.  The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

The following principles are the foundation of naturopathic medical practice:

  • Treat the Whole Person: Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic physicians encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development.

  • First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere): Naturopathic physicians follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:

    • Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat;

    • Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms; and

    • Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ self-healing process.

  • The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae): Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process
  • Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam): The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
  • Doctor as Teacher (Docere): Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.

In-home Healthy Cooking Classes

I offer a unique experience for you and your family or friends as an in-home cooking class. My experience as an avid home-cook and previous owner of a full-service restaurant, coupled with my extensive nutrition knowledge and being a former professional singer/performer, lends itself to being a knowledgeable and engaging cooking instructor. I began these cooking classes to promote and foster patient confidence and skill in the kitchen.  One of the biggest obstacles to weight loss is the reliance on fast and take-out food. The classes can be centered around a theme, such as "Plant-based Cooking", "Gluten-free Eating", "Healthy Holidays", "Quick Family Dinners", "Sunday Meal Prep", "Keto-diet Cooking" and many more, or we can work on a customized menu plan. The classes typically are scheduled in the evening, last 1.5 hours and make a great couples or girl's night in, a unique anniversary or birthday party/gift or fun family gathering.  You will learn 3-4 recipes and have plenty of food to share or take-home.  My staff and I will do all the shopping, prep and clean-up in your kitchen.  Classes typically have 2-8 people and fees are negotiable.  You will be amazed at how much you learn while also laughing and having fun!
